dystopiameaning.com is a personal, non-commercial project built for fun to practice front-end development and to explore the dystopian genre in fiction. This page explains exactly what data the site does and does not collect. It is written in plain language and applies to this website only.

The short version: the only data this site collects is anonymous, aggregate traffic measurement through Google Analytics. It does not ask for, store, or sell your name, email, or any personal account information. There is no login, no newsletter, and no form that captures your details.

1. What we collect

The site uses Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to understand how many people visit and which sections they read, so the project can be improved. Through GA4, Google may process:

Pages viewed, time on page, and general interaction events.
Approximate location (country/region level), derived from a truncated IP address (IP anonymization is enabled).
Device and browser type, screen size, and referring website.
A randomly generated identifier stored in a cookie to distinguish repeat visits.

This data is aggregated and is not used to personally identify you. We do not collect names, email addresses, payment details, or precise location.

2. Cookies and consent

Analytics cookies are only set after you choose “Accept” on the cookie banner. Until then, Google Consent Mode keeps analytics storage denied, and no analytics cookies are placed. If you choose “Decline,” no analytics cookies are set and no measurement data is stored about your visit.

Your choice is remembered using a single small cookie (dm_consent) so the banner does not reappear on every visit. This cookie stores only the word “granted” or “denied.”

3. Aesthetic “tracking” effects

This site has a cinematic theme that includes fake on-screen “surveillance,” “scanning,” and “recording” visuals. These are purely a stylistic effect for atmosphere. They run entirely in your browser, perform no real tracking, and store and transmit no data whatsoever.

4. Third parties

Analytics is provided by Google. Their handling of data is governed by Google’s own privacy policy and terms. The site also loads fonts from Google Fonts. No data is sold or shared with advertisers, and the site runs no advertising.

5. How to opt out or withdraw consent

Choose “Decline” on the cookie banner.
Clear this site’s cookies in your browser to make the banner reappear and choose again.
Use your browser’s privacy settings, or install Google’s Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.

6. Your rights

Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR or CCPA), you may have rights to access, correct, or delete data held about you. Because this site only holds anonymous, aggregated analytics and no personal identifiers, there is generally nothing personally identifiable to retrieve.
